The ultimate footballing title returns, better than ever and fully combatible on Xbox Live!
PCWell, what do you do when the masterful Thierry Henry has gone and transferred to Pro Evolution Soccer' Get his club captain signed up along with Morientes and the deadly Andriy Shevchenko, that's what. FIFA Football 2005 for XBox arrives in the UK several weeks in advance of its only real rival, eager to snatch some sales from those not prepared to wait for the much-anticipated Konami game. Whaddya gonna do' While Konami delight in satisfying the more discerning footy fan, EA Sports take the lead when it comes to genuine innovation, something that'll keep its loyal fanbase coming back year after year. And so to the action on the pitch: EA Sports have crammed a lot into such a small space with some really innovative new moves and tricks, backed up with some returning favourites. The First Touch system is the biggest deal for most of us: you have to use the right analogue stick to trap or flick incoming passes and gain extra space, as the speed and vision of every player in the game is transplanted direct to your own fingers. 'Off the Ball' control makes a return, having debuted in FIFA 2004 and is better than ever in 2005. You can take command of players not in possession of the ball by calling in tackles, jostling for space and sending your team-mates on runs. You can also control the movement of receivers at throw-ins as well as free kicks and corners. Aspiring soccer stars can also realise their dreams of superstardom in the all-new Creation Zone. With a nod to the Tiger Woods games from EA Sports, you can now customise players using the advanced modelling system, or set yourself fresh challengesby creating new tournaments.FIFA Football 2005's deep Career mode tests your skills both on and off the pitch. Make the tough decisions behind the scenes to turn your team into real challengers and then guide them in a 15-year quest for silverware. That's right, a 15-year career - that's a long time in player/management. FIFA Football 2005 features more official leagues than any other soccer game, boasting 18 leagues, 350+ clubs, 38 national teams and around 15,000 real players. EA Sports Online gives you the chance to export your very own brand of football to the rest of the world - well, those with a broadband connection anyway - and trade verbal blows or let your feet/fingers do the talking. With authentic crowd chants, officially licensed stadiums and a variety of weather conditions (orange ball, orange ball!), FIFA Football 2005 gives you total football realism.

Magnify Snowboard Kids Sbk

Snowboard Kids Sbk
Video Games
Rising Star
The Snowboard Kids are back on a Nintendo console after what seems like a lifetime away, and the news is better than good. If you've been hankering for some of that Mario Kart-style downhill racing-slash-combat on snow, coupled with the over-the-top stunt larks of EA's fantastic SSX Tricky (note not SSX, SSX on Tour or any of its other inferior iterations) then here is manna from wintry heaven: more eastern-flavoured than western, in your hands, at a reasonable price, and with a multiplayer facility too. What are you waiting for' Stop reading and buy!SBK's main attraction is the World Tour Challenge, in which you select one of the quirky characters to play as, and try to ascend the boarding rankings. A selection of courses from around the world are there for the conquering, but it's not just the trickiness of the terrain that'll test your digital dexterity, oh no. There're also three other competitors to deal with, and in a nod to the aforementioned Mario Kart, they're each equipped with a weapon unique to them, such as a fireball or a lightning bolt. But then, so are you, so hopefully you can even things out in the long run. If you don't feel you're ready for the big challenge from the first insertion of the game cartridge (what's wrong with you' This is about as 'pick-up-and-playable' as a game gets) then you can always get to grips with SBK in the Training mode. Slalom mode is another option open to the gamer, as well as Boss Battle, and both these are part of the larger World Tour too. Needless to say, we ditched the starter, went straight forthe main course, and learned as we went along. And we had great fun doing it. After 30 or so minutes, the manual was consulted to see exactly what use - if any - was being made of the touch-screen, and suddenly it all became clear. All of a sudden we were tapping away and combining some ostentatious moves while getting mighty air. It was like an epiphany, and looking further through the manual revealed further joys which we shall not divulge here. Just go find out for yourselves.Snowboard Kids SBK gets a nine dudes out of ten from us. The DS's limited graphical power lets it down a little, but its novel use of the touch-screen and the fact that it's the best portable snowboarding experience we've seen thus far in our long lives bumps up our notoriously finicky rating.

Konami
2006 will see Konami taking Pro Evolution Soccer 6 to a number of new formats as demand for the much-loved football title continues to grow at a phenomenal pace. In addition to the customary PlayStation 2, PC-DVD and PSP versions of the game, Konami will also be releasing the first versions for Xbox 360 and Nintendo's DS handheld. The Pro Evolution Soccer series is renowned for its realism, and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is abundant with new gameplay additions. Player AI has been massively upgraded, with players running intelligently into space when not in possession of the ball and pointing where they want the pass placed to continue the attack. Similarly, the physical side of play has been refined, with players working to turn a defender as they receive the ball, while defenders must learn to stand off slightly to prevent such moves.Series creator Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka has also worked to refine the shooting system of the new game, and players will be able to attempt more snap shots than in previous versions, while volleys and half-volleys have been redesigned. Other new moves include the ability to retain control of the ball when sliding in to tackle, while all-new feints and backwards dribbling are now available thanks to the improved dribbling controls, while headers have been changed to allow players more movement in the way their strikers jump and head the ball.Pro Evolution Soccer 6 also has a number of new teams licensed for inclusion, with the International roster now featuring the official kits for Argentina, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Sweden. Details on official club teams and more national squads will follow.Other new additions include more balanced referees, and a selection of exciting new gameplay modes. An International Challenge involves leading your home country to victory through a series of entry and tournament rounds, while a Random mode lets the player play quick games within randomly-generated match day settings. The much-loved Master League also returns, allowing players to experience the many highs and lows of steering a team through years of competitive games. Aging players, injuries and pressure from the board all combine to create a truly immersive game where results are everything...With its slick moves and realistic action, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is certain to glide past rival titles with ease and enjoys an impressive roster of new moves, licensed clubs, and gameplay modes.

Empire Interactive
Another movie-turned-video game, Empire's offering of Bad Boys II sees players take control of their favourite narcotics detectives Mike Lowry and Marcus Burnett in a brand new third-person shooter of cinematic proportions for PC.This time around, Mike and Marcus have been assigned to a hi-tech task force investigating the flow of designer ecstasy into Miami. Their inquiries inadvertently lead them to a major conspiracy involving a notorious kingpin, whose ambitions to take over the drug trade have ignited a bloody turf war.And so the adventure begins. Not the subtlest of cops, Mike and Marcus at the very least ensure this isn't going to be a quiet, intellectual game a la X-Files. On the contrary, as you take control of these unorthodox law enforcers, you'll find yourself armed to the teeth as you eliminate myriad drug dealers and henchmen before destroying a few cars and even a helicopter. It's very much like the film, and works very well as an arcade experience.Bad Boys II takes place across some 15 fast-paced levels that play host to multiple mission objectives and frenetic good-cop gameplay. Environments are typical to this style of game, and have players blazing through office buildings, factories and warehouses without a care in the world for their own safety. It's a good-looking game that is sure to appeal to the most casual of gamers on first glance. But underneath the mainstream marketing and movie licenses lies a good game from Empire.

Europa Universalis

Paradox Entertainment
Global domination is something that no one in the real world has yet accomplished, and the title will probably always go unused. To compensate all the country-greedy citizens out there, Europa Universalis was produced, courtesy of Paradox Entertainment. While its world maybe virtual, this outing into warfare should prove more exhilarating than anything you could accomplish in reality. Before beginning a game you should take the opportunity to have a look in the options menu, since all the major features of the game are fully customisable. The basics of the game entice the player into a challenge to dominate as many global countries as possible. Generally, you begin in a single country, and from there on in you must learn to populate your land with army's and the likes before challenging a neighbouring county and country. Giving Europa a sense of perspective as regards to its size, there over ninety countries and in excess of 800 named provinces. The whole world isn't up for grabs, but there are several countries available from most continents, and a full library of European countries. Since Europa is a game of strategy and gameplay, the game does not visually impress, and tends to show more geographical maps than anything else. Those of you looking for an epic challenge can choose to tackle the Grand Campaign that takes over 300 years of game time to complete. Thankfully, your playing time can be speeded up in the options menu.Europa also offers a multi-player option in which up to seven of your friends can participate. It is much more satisfying to defeat a real player, and it's this option that makes Europa and pleasure to play.

Lords Of The Realm Iii
Video Games
Vivendi Games
The latest title to vie for the attention of the average real-time strategy fanatic is Lords of the Realm III. The third instalment in the series that dates back to the days of the Commodore Amiga, the game is set in the middle ages, between 850 and 1350 AD, and incorporates a diverse assortment of gameplay elements, including castle building, siege, religion, politics, and conquest.Featuring castle designs and characters authentic to their respective time periods, Lords of the Realm III boasts a wide variety of different scenarios and campaigns, which encompass the British Isles, Germany, France, Normandy, Brittany, Flanders and Denmark. On top of the standard combat, the game also takes into account the powerful clergy and merchant classes of the time, which are important factions in your ultimate quest - to become King.Acting as a feudal lord, your main objectives throughout the game are acquiring more land and power, keeping the church at bay, and exploiting the towns and cities that you have contact with. Along the way, you also have to prevent greedy burghers and merchants from becoming too powerful, as well as build sturdy castles in order to protect your assets.Failing that, you can also choose from an assortment of historically accurate existing strongholds, which range from early 'Motte and Bailey' stockades, through the stout stone towers of the Normans, up to the culmination of the grand Edwardian castles in the late 1200's and early 1300's. Then the real fun begins, as you embark upon grand scale sieges and attempt to tear down the enemy castles. Throughout the battles, you can manipulate a wide array of siege engines, such as trebuchets, catapults, ballistae and mangonels. Or, if you prefer the direct approach, you can attempt to breach the castle defences by less destructive means, such as scaling ladders, siege towers, and battering rams - leaving the castle in a slightly better condition for when you take it over.

Original War
Video Games
Virgin Interactive
Take control of US marines sent on a one-way trip into the past to move the Siberite into American territory or command Russian troops to go back and keep it where it is
The trick to making a good game often lies in the subject at hand. Most players would agree that repetition within a game, no matter how great the game may be, is an unwanted attribute. Now, there are many real-time strategy games (RTS) that consist mainly of killing everything that moves. Such games are great for a short time, but act as something of a self-deterrent after prolonged play. Alter Interactive has taken steps to avoid this trap with the production of Original War for PC.First of all, Original War has been developed in a non-linear fashion. The game story is not a pre-programmed event for the most part, and features branching plot lines. Original War also manages, with success, to mix two very distinct genres, RTS and role-playing, into its gameplay. Each and every one of your animated solders has a unique face and name, as well as abilities that can be improved as you progress.Perhaps the most valuable assets to Original War are the campaign mode missions. There are a few missions that entail blowing the heads off the enemy, yes, but most incorporate a more strategic approach. For example, there is a level in which you must retrieve an enemy scientist (alive) and retreat to your base without getting caught. Also, when out on a mission, survival becomes much harder and resources must be found, put to good use and rationed. To build a new tank, for example, you must first find the resources necessary before increasing your domination in the game. When all these features are combined they create what is evidently an excellent RTS game that is worth its weight in gold to fans of the genre.

Sonic R
Video Games
Empire Interactive
A racing game staring Sonic the Hedgehog makes sense when you think about it. The first thing everyone noticed about the first incarnation of Sonic was the awesome speed at which it moved. It would be fair to say that at the time of its release, Sonic the Hedgehog was the fastest game ever, moving along at a rate previously thought unimaginable. Even the Gamegear version was LCD blurringly quick.Sonic R first emerged as a Saturn title back in 1997 and was received well by critics and punters alike. It runs (if you can pardon the pun) along the same lines as Codemaster's Micro Maniacs with the playable racers legging it around a series of tracks. All the sentient characters from the Sonic series have been included by Sega, in very much the same was as Nintendo did with Super Mario Kart. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Robitnik and the rest can all be seen jostling for position. The PC version of Sonic R looks really good, far better than the 3D deficient Saturn. The draw distance is very deep with the background scenery and track detail merging well. There are three main game modes for you to enjoy. The first and most enjoyable in one player mode is Grand Prix. This pitches every character in a race all at the same time. As with every Sonic game, you pick up rings as you travel around the level which give you a buffer against any mishap. There are also the standard Sonic Power-ups to collect such as speed sneakers and invincibility. There is also a time attack mode to allow you brush up on your skills when tackling a specific track. The fun really starts when you have a friend or four to play with. Sonic R's multiplayer mode supports up to four players simultaneously and is as good a laugh as Mario Kart. No mean feat We're sure you will agree

Did you ever want to play a truly realistic looking game' Something that looks like you're watching coverage on TV' Yes' Well, Tiger Woods PGA Golf 2000 is as close as you're gonna get. This instalment of the PGA Golf series looks stunning.Golf games are typically either loved or hated, but you at least have to try them to see which side of the fence you're on. Conversion may not be too far away, you never know. Tiger's joined by nine fellow professionals in this game, but let's skip those details for now. All the endorsements and sponsorships in the world can't replace playability. Gameplay, as always, is king. There are in excess of ten modes of play around with, including Season, Skins, and Shoot-Out competitions. PGA Golf's learning curve is actually quite steep, and perhaps is already targeted at players who know a bit about golf. Once you can get past this it will soon become second nature; a little bit like learning to ride a bike. A welcome addition to this golf title is the course designer. You are free to create brand new bunker-ridden courses, or edit existing courses to suit your own preferences. With fantastic ball physics and character animation, Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf 2000 comes recommended to PC-owning golf fans.

Warrior Kings: Battles
Video Games
Empire Interactive
Warrior Kings: Battles takes place many years after the events of the original Warrior Kings game. As the story tells it, the peace and unity that Artos delivered to the land of Orbis has been brought to an end by the assassination of the last Artosian ruler. The ensuing struggle for power destroyed the fabric of the Empire, and it has collapsed in on itself, wracked by civil war, famine and disease. Orbis is now plunged into chaos, war is raging across the land, its Empires, Nations, Kaliphates, and Kingdoms are breaking down into Baronies, Provinces and City States - each set against the others in a battle for survival and supremacy.Players take command of a small province and must either conquer or die in this latest RTS game - a stand-alone title that adds a new strategic and tactical dimension to the series. The game comes complete with a full skirmish mode that boasts a rather proficient computer AI system. For example, AI Generals build a functioning economy, offensive/defensive armies, correctly control formations, and intelligently probe players' defences, looking for their weak points. AI Diplomacy, a major new feature, makes players think they're playing against human opponents, giving a new depth to single and multiplayer Internet gaming. For those who like an epic RTS, Warrior Kings: Battles has a large strategic replayable Campaign that allows players to battle through the land of Orbis, choosing their own path and defeating a variety of AI generals along the way. Players have to conquer new territories, increase the size of their armies, and gain new technologies before finally capturing the fortress-like city of Telemagna. Also, the game introduces a whole new mode to the RTS genre. As well as conventional multiplayer options, the new 'Valhalla' allows players to choose their own re-spawning armies without resource building, and fight them against any combination of human or AI opponents. Unit limits and time limits can be set to give the player full control over the length of game played, as well as Capture the Flag and other fast pace action game modes. It's safe to say that there's quite a lot to Warrior Kings: Battles. As far as strategy games go, this is certainly one that's worth adding to your collection.

Cold War: Behind The Iron Curtain

Dreamcatcher
We don't take much notice of politics here at SPOnG, but we do reckon that it was far more exciting when the Cold War was still one. OK, so we mostly weren't even born during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and our understanding of the situation in the 80s is informed mainly by a knowledge of Top Gun and From Russia With Love. But still, it all sounds very exciting, and aren't things simpler when the world is neatly polarised into goodies and baddies'Cold War takes you back to these thrilling times, and you take the role of Matt Carter, a New York journalist who left the cosy existence of a staff writer for the dangerous world on international investigative freelancing. But on a mission to Moscow, everything goes a bit wrong, and Carter finds himself in a KGB detention cell, framed for a crime he hasn't committed. What will happen next is anyone's guess. Matt could find himself being packed off to a Siberian labour camp, or worse'summarily executed. He elects not to stay around and find out.He may earn his crust behind a typewriter but there's nothing bookish about Matt Carter. A troublesome, tinkering child, his father envisaged him finding his niche as some sort of engineer. A working knowledge of gadgetry will stand him in good stead as he looks to steal Soviet gizmos to use against his would-be imprisoners. The most high-tech device is a prototype camera that knocks enemies out with a radioactive beam, and also allows you to see through walls. This is at the higher end of things though and you'll also have to make use of slingshots, cigarettes (European-bait, apparently) and alarm clocks.Of course, the Russians are still convinced you've done something and after your repeated attempts to uncover Soviet conspiracies they don't much like you. See if you can sneak and spy your way through the stern, impenetrable splendour of 80s Moscow. And maybe even get a scoop on the way out, eh'

While films based upon games rarely turn out to be anything more than a low-budget mediocre flick, games based upon films can be a different story altogether. And next up in the ongoing movie-cum-game line up is THQ's Polar Express, released the very same day as the film itself.Unlike its handheld counterpart, the console rendition of Polar Express is a fully 3D and much more convincing offering that puts players onboard the fantasy train as a young boy in search of the lost tickets. It's essentially a free-roaming platform game, and Bringing the Zemeckis masterpiece to life, players are generally charged with the usual run, jump, dodge shenanigans as they wander the vast carriages of the mysterious train. From the outset, those familiar with the visual style and theme of the film will notice just how faithful the video game port of Polar Express really is. The varied locales are just as vibrant and colourful as those in the film and are all tied together by a series of respectable FMV sequences and in-game cut-scenes.The complete adventure isn't as long as some, but the addition of mini-games, vehicles and puzzle element helps to break the routine and at least offer a mixture of fun and indeed challenging playing styles.Like the film, the video game port of The Polar Express is clearly geared towards a younger gaming audience, and has a difficulty level to suit - for the most part. It's a well-timed offering from THQ that kids will mostly likely enjoy in its entirety.

Championship Manager 2006

It's getting towards the business end of the 2005-2006 season in the English football leagues at the time of Championship Manager 2006's release on PC: time perhaps, for a reminder of just how much of one's life can be frittered away in front of a monitor, and not only through being an elf in a MMORPG, looking at rude things on the 'net, or blowing away HR Giger-like monsters on the latest rootin'-tootin' incarnation of Doom/Quake/Whatever's Hot With Goths. Yes, it is time, once again, to don the virtual sheepskin coat and get down to some serious Harry Redknapp-style wheeling and a-dealing. Your mission' To assemble a squad of players that can take on the best in not only the domestic league, but in foreign fields too.Championship Manager 2006 (CM2006) allows you the chance to take your club to glory, but only by taking full responsibility in dealing with everything: from tactics and training to transfers and contract negotiations, improving the morale of your squad and the moods of individuals, and some things that even the likes of Big Sam Allardyce and Little Stevie Coppell wouldn't dream of having to do, such as accepting a cash injection from a wealthy benefactor or doing your own scouting.CM2006 includes a brand new 3D match engine where players can watch games unfold in the same way they watch the match on telly, but with the ability to tinker with tactics, player positions and formations. Those in a hurry can use the Highlight Filter to select the best bits to watch. Authentic fitness regimes devised by ex-Leeds United goalkeeper and current first team coach at Charlton Athletic, Mervyn Day have been implemented to add a sliver more reality to your management experience. You can study the opposition's current form through what developer Beautiful Game calls 'parallel match processing', which means you can watch other team's previous matches through the Gameplan 3D engine, before you face them.CM2006, then; another footy management game with the power to destroy any meaningful relationships you may have/may be thinking of initiating. Let's be careful out there.

Experience your Waterloo - or leave the field victorious!
CDV's Cossacks: European Wars was a RTS game set in the Europe of the 17th and 18th centuries. Players could choose one of several European nations and expand their empires across the continent. Two further expansion packs were released, adding two new nations and larger game maps each time, and all three were finally re-released in a collector's edition in 2003. The isometrically-angled game featured naval and land combat, resource management, and various strategies and unit formations. Now a worthy successor to this RTS favourite follows on from the period of its ancestor and moves its focus onto the Napoleonic Wars of the late 18th and early 19th century; from 1792 to Waterloo in 1815. Taking command of one of six nations - France, Britain, Austria, Prussia, Russia and Egypt - players can marshal forces of sizes comparable to those seen historically - up to 64,000 units. The game uses a new 3D terrain engine, which fills the terrain with flora, fauna and even settlements from which you can harvest resources and recruits. The pomp and pageantry of the era are brought to life with authentic, colourful uniforms, tactics typical of the nations involved and even recreated live action sequences when you issue orders. With over 150 different units, there's plenty of variety, and the 3D engine simulates the behaviour of cannon and musket balls. Combat formations and tactical orders have been enhanced, and troop morale and fatigue are simulated for extra realism. But it might not even come to that'many encounters can be avoided by astute and timely diplomatic action, and it is possible to make various treaties and pacts with neighbouring countries on the map, which is based on the actual political topography of the day.As well as campaigns and battles against AI that are based on actual historical events, gamers can play deathmatches, battles and campaigns over the internet or LAN. Truly an attractive prospect for strategy fans who enjoyed the first Cossacks game, and also for enthusiasts of this exciting and bloody period of European history.

Take 2
The original release of Grand Theft Auto in 1997 sent the media into a frenzy over the nature of this title. Grand Theft Auto's controversy factor, tagged with a BBFC 18 rating, spelled success. As unintentional as it may seem, GTA was marketed by the media. As they say, any publicity is good publicity. GTA's success led to the release of GTA London, and finally, GTA 2 on PC.Unsurprisingly, this desktop version of the controversial series is by far the most pleasing to the eye. You are amongst seven gangs in a brutal power struggle, and your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to work your way to the top of the crime ladder. This can be accomplished by completing tasks and avoiding the police, thus earning respect from your seniors. There are literally hundreds of missions to challenge your crime abilities. Transport within these missions is of vital importance, so vehicles such as corporate Limousines and ice cream trucks have been provided to aid you. The most valuable asset to GTA 2 is the game's non-linear approach, giving a superior sense of freedom that will appeal to most players. What's more, GTA 2's urban environment is highly active, and responds to the players'moves with surprising accuracy. A multi-player option over LAN is a desirable attribute to GTA 2 that may well prove to be the game's primary selling point. There is little doubt that Grand Theft Auto 2 will receive as much, if not more media attention that its predecessors did. Almost a guaranteed success is on the cards for Take 2 Interactive.
